I’ve been looking for lions. They are everywhere, especially on fountains. They usually look anything but ferocious. The guy above, in Toulouse, looks a bit pained.

Lions are just one of the little details I see around me that remind me that we’re not in Kansas anymore. They make me smile and warm my heart.
I’m all for stone lions on fountains. Just no live ones in circus acts or zoos!

Absolutely. I wrote about the circus and its pathetic lion: https://francetaste.wordpress.com/2016/08/10/the-circus-comes-to-town/

Was it Venice that had the lion as it’s symbol? Most people had never seen a lion, why then are so many featured on fountains and buildings?

Yes, a winged lion is a symbol of Venice. The lion also is a symbol of England. Lions had mostly disappeared from Europe by 300 BC.

I love lions too. We have two cement urns with lions on them and a water fountain with a lion.

Marvelous lions! We have a number of them here, often symbols of our British legacy.

Lovely piece on these lions. As you know, I am fascinated by recurring motifs we see down here in Occitanie. Trev has just completed a joinery project and incorporated a typical “losange” motif. All his own idea!!!

I loved this post. I love to see what you see in your everyday life. Stone lions, yes! But lions in cages or zoos?, no please. My heart breaks for them. If I had my way, there would be neither.
