Even though this blog is about the good life in France, and appreciating the Gallic taste in all things gastronomic and aesthetic, we usually avoid fashion. There are just so many great French fashion and street-style blogs: Garance Doré (even though she moved to NY; she remains steadfastly French), Inès de la Fressange,  French Essence and more.

The woman in white/khaki, left, was meeting the one in the white dress.

How fantastic is the woman above in the white dress? The skirt is lace. She’s wearing gold sneakers. And that mini straw bag! Her friend, left, also looks classy in a simple, crisp white shirt and khaki trousers. Note the sharp crease on the sleeve. People here iron.

Neutrals are winners in summer. I think both of these women look like a million bucks.

Or take the pair above. Clearly the one on the right fits the classic image of a chic French woman. I love that she’s wearing  flats. Her market basket is full. Fanciful feathers in her hat. Her tunic is a bit transparent, so she has on beige leggings. This was in summer, so it was quite warm, but she isn’t baring much. Her friend on the left isn’t as svelte (and this isn’t a perfect-body blog, so we don’t care!), but she has chosen a top that’s cool and flattering.

Not everybody goes neutral. This woman mixed orange and apple green.

There’s plenty of material walking around here, though usually I fail to have my camera in my hand. There’s one woman who dresses like Geneviève de Fontenay, always in an impeccable suit, with a hat cocked at a jaunty angle.

Of course, we also see some don’ts. Even in France.

  1. We all want to see what real women look like. However the truly chic do stand out and we can all learn from them.
As usual merci….I have been practicing…..

    1. I think the big lesson is Less Is More. All those women in shades of beige are doing less with color. And that white dress is so simple and unadorned. It would be boring if everybody dressed in beige, of course. But the woman with the orange flowers and green scarf certainly has color galore, but her lines are simple.

  2. Hm, I think it’s pretty cool to wear as many colours at her age. But yes, those are some elegant women… And still I saw many people in the background of your pictures that aren’t completely stylish, and felt right in criticising all those “French Women are perfect”-books.

    1. It’s very true that not everybody is stylish, but the point isn’t to focus on them–maybe style isn’t their thing. But given the number of people I tend to see in a day in town, there are a high percentage who look really great and I wanted to give them a positive shout-out.
I love colors (fuchsia! red! turquoise!) but the ones who really rise to elegance seem to be in subtle tones. I did see a woman one day in head-to-toe Kelly green and she looked fabulous, but I didn’t get a photo. Of course it would be horribly boring if we all wore beige or black.
I’ll keep looking. I’m not going to do a street style blog because there are too many who are far better, but I’ll gather photos now and then to share.

  3. Love how the simplicity really stands out. That first woman with the market basket: what stands out for me is a) how nicely she’s arranged her scarf and b) that she seems to have chosen to integrate this season’s “hot” color (yellow) with her shoes. Great shots!

  4. Thank you for sharing this insight into your local world…. Like others I love a couple of these looks. And I’m a firm believer that we need all the contrasts to help us understand what we think looks good!! I’ve refined what I do like by working out what I don’t like!

  5. I just recently discovered your blog. I love it! It’s so full of French everyday quirks that I enjoy reading about. I will definitely continue reading.

And yes that lady in the white skirt is gorgeous!

    Wishing you a bon week-end!

  6. Now that we have our house in France, we spend a lot of time people watching. I have always been impressed by French style, in general. I think in the UK we are probably more slaves to fashion, whereas most – but not all -French women have more of a classic style. I know that my French friends tend to have fewer outfits in their wardrobes than my British friends. However, we live in a small town here that I would describe as ‘shabby chic’ (with the emphasis on shabby!) which I happen to love but I have noticed fewer – in my opinion – of those stereotypical glamourous French women. However, go to Toulouse and the style of dress is quite different. I am a ‘femme d’un certain age’ and I am so impressed with the way many women in my age group are dressed. Apologies for such a long comment & I am now going to look at some of those blogs you mention.

  7. That woman in white knows how to carry off an outfit…(although I’m not sure about the earrings) and the lady with the basket is chic in an understated way. I’ve visited France three times this year and seen lots of stylish women and many more dressed quite ordinarily, in contrast to the stereotype of the chic Françaises that we hear about so often. Lovely post. Bon weekend.

    1. I’m in a touristy area, and it’s sometimes hard to spot the chic ones amid the folks dressed down for vacation. But there is a move away from being “dressed up” toward being comfortable and chic. Which is almost harder to pull off.

  8. While my personal preference leans towards the two in neutrals walking away from the camera, I would choose the last for a lunch date, I bet she’s loads of fun to spend an hour catching up with.
